Recent deaths prompt the charity to warn anyone near the coast to take extra care during the rough weather and high tides.

WITH two tragic deaths in recent days the RNLI has warned sightseers not to take chances near the coast during the rough weather.

A woman died after being swept out to sea at Croyde Beach on New Years Eve and a man also drowned at Loe Bar in Cornwall a few hours later.

The charity said: “‘After the tragic deaths of two people swept out to sea in two separate incidents over the last few days, and with more windy weather forecast, please do take extra care if you’re going down to the coast. In particular, avoid exposed places where big waves could sweep you off your feet.”

Ilfracombe has proved a draw for wave watchers, but Chris Wallis, volunteer lifeboat operations manager for Ilfracombe RNLI, also warned people to take care during the high tides tonight (Friday) and tomorrow morning.

“During the current and forecast weather conditions, we would advise everyone to be careful when near the sea,” he said.

“While we all appreciate the majestic picture created by the waves, the danger cannot be stressed enough.

“Please do take care when near the coast and don’t put yourself in any unnecessary danger.”
