Five teams of clinical and administration staff will be bidding to raise money for the hospital on Sunday, June 15.

FIVE teams of doctors, nurses, health professionals and senior managers from Barnstaple hospital will be taking on the Bideford Triathlon this Sunday (June 15).

The teams aim to raise money for North Devon Medical Research and Education Trust to buy a new endoscopy imaging machine.

There is a lot of competitiveness between the teams and one of the challenges will be for the clinical staff to beat the management team.

They range in experience – for example divisional general manager Andy Burgess is a seasoned marathon runner and has competed in ‘ultra-distance’ events, while one of the consultants has lost 12 kilos after training and dieting.

Dr Andrew Davis, who is taking part, said “This is a fantastic event in Bideford and a great sporting challenge for us all.”

Dr Alex Moran, who is also participating added: “Donations will be very gratefully received and the monies will be used towards equipment that will be of considerable benefit to patients receiving endoscopy in North Devon.”

The hospital has an imaging machine but needs two so they can be used simultaneously in the two endoscopy treatment rooms. The imager helps to make colonoscopy procedures easier to perform and also lessens any discomfort. Each machine costs £70,000.

The triathlon starts and finishes at Bideford Quay with 500 metre swimmers setting off at 7.45am, followed by a 22.5 kilometre cycle and 5k run. The competition transition stages will also take place at the quay.
