Officers discovered doctor, 47, at scene of collision at Brockham Bridge with a minor head injury.

A consultant doctor was more than three-and-a-half times over the legal limit when he crashed his car on the A39 at Arlington in May.

Dr Nicholas Ward, 47, of Little Stowford, Bratton Fleming, was discovered by police with minor head injuries after the collision at Brockham Bridge on May 29.

The court heard he was obstructive, refusing treatment from paramedics and avoiding officers, saying he was a doctor and didn’t want treatment. When asked if he had been drinking, he told police ‘not to ask him that’.

He blew a positive roadside breath test at the scene and when taken to hospital he had a blood test which revealed a reading of 281 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of blood.

Michael Oerton, defending, said Ward had ‘self imposed’ a disqualification on himself since the collision and now cycled to work.

He said the collision was a ‘wake up call’ and he had now sought medical help for his alcohol problems.

Magistrates disqualified Ward from driving for 32 months, fined him £1,000 and ordered him to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.
