BARNSTAPLE’S deputy mayor has labelled the current state of one of the town’s streets ‘diabolical’.

Councillor Julie Hunt says drivers are abusing Mermaid Walk, at the end of High Street, and said that the brick work is now ‘sinking’.

Cllr Hunt has called for the one-way road to be pedestrianised ‘as soon as possible’ as drivers ‘ignore the road signs’.

“I think some of the people need to go back to driving lessons because they obviously don’t understand the signs,” she said.

Mrs Hunt also highlighted the high number of cars which park on the road as a serious problem.

“I’m surprised there hasn’t been an accident before,” she said. “You’ve got cars parking right by the post box so people with push chairs have to go out onto the road just to post a letter.

“I even saw someone the other day going the wrong way.

“It’s had a really big impact on the businesses down the road because they can’t just stop and nip in.

“No one’s enforcing the parking restrictions and you see people walking back to their cars with shopping.”

Mrs Hunt, who became Barnstaple’s deputy mayor earlier this year, has also called on Devon County Council to do more to offer improved parking in the town at affordable rates.
