Fire crews free trapped calf near Arlington Court.

FIRE crews rescued a deer stuck in a lake at Arlington Court yesterday afternoon (Sunday).

The wild animal was reported to be trapped in silt in the middle of the lake at around 1.30pm.

A specialist rescue team from Barnstaple used an inflatable rescue boat to reach the red deer calf and release it from mud in the lake.

The animal was suffering from the affects of cold and unfortunately died despite the efforts of National Trust staff to warm it.

Arlington Court outdoor manager Murray Sharpe, said it was possible that the deer had been chased into the lake by a dog.

“The deer was very small and we don’t know how long it had been there,” he said.

“Wild deer are not used to human contact and sadly, it did not survive, possibly due to a combination of stress and the cold.”
