Nick Harvey MP welcomes reversal of plans to retain 24 (Commando) Engineer Regiment following defence review.

NORTH Devon MP Nick Harvey has welcomed the decision to retain Chivenor’s engineer regiment.

Thursday’s announcement revisits the withdrawal of Chivenor’s 24 (Commando) Engineer Regiment as part of wider armed forces restructuring set out in the 2012 Army 2020 Review.

Following a review into the Army capabilities available to support Royal Navy tasks, it has been decided the regiment will now be kept at Chivenor, but in slightly smaller numbers.

The changes are expected to come into operation no later than July 2015.

“Chivenor is an incredibly important part of North Devon’s identity and we can all be proud of its skilled military personnel, who have made an outstanding contribution to operations in Afghanistan in recent years,” said Mr Harvey.

“The 2012 decision to downgrade Chivenor’s engineer regiment took everyone by surprise and the community’s reaction was understandably of shock.

“However it was said at the time that the decision was subject to a review by the chain of command as to what logistical support the Marines need.

“There was clearly some recognition in its conclusions about how valuable the skills of regiments like 24 Royal Engineers are to the Marines going forward, so I’m pleased the Government indicated that the regiment’s head count will at least be partially restored to reflect this.

“At a time of major Army restructuring and a rebalancing of capabilities across the board, the announcement provides us with assurances Chivenor’s capabilities will be valued into the future. I look forward to seeing a smaller but no less important 24 Engineers Regiment playing an active role at the base once again.”
