Barnstaple’s See Hear Centre invites people to find out more about its services.
THE See Hear Centre in Barnstaple is using Deaf Awareness Week to invite highlight the services it offers.
Deaf Awareness runs throughout this week from tomorrow (Monday) to Friday as charities and groups across the UK join forces to promote understanding of hearing loss and ‘Equality in Communication for All’.
One in six people are deaf or hard of hearing and about two million in the UK have hearing aids. Hearing loss can have a profound effect on the quality of peoples’ lives with many facing communication barriers leading to isolation, exclusion from society and lack of confidence.
The See Hear Centre at Alexandra Road provides a service to counteract the effects of hearing loss, bringing people back in contact with the outside world and giving access to equipment, advice and information.
It also runs a mobile See Hear on Wheels service bus to take this out into remoter North Devon and Torridge communities, with a full range of sensory equipment on board for people to try and a loan service is also available. It is funded by The Big Lottery Fund.
There are also monthly Hearing Loss Support Groups, providing an opportunity for socialising with others in a hearing-loss friendly environment.
