Combe Martin heating engineer Dan Murdoch raises more than £3,000 with seven marathons in seven days challenge

A COMBE Martin heating engineer has raised more than £3,000 for Diabetes UK by running seven off-road marathons in seven days.

Dan Murdoch, 30, was inspired to take on the extreme challenge by his brother-in-law Arthur Wharf, who suffers from type one diabetes.

The illness cannot be prevented and needs to be managed with daily insulin injections.

Dan racked up a total of 187 miles along the gruelling South West coast path through North Devon and Cornwall – running at least 26.2 miles every day – on his way to smashing his £750 fundraising target.

Dan’s epic journey began in St Agnes in Cornwall on Monday June 23, and took him through Bude, Instow and Barnstaple.

Dan completed the challenge with the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Marathon in Woolacombe on Sunday, where, remarkably, he managed to run his fastest marathon of the week on his way to 40th overall out of 178 finishers.

Dan, who is a regular runner with North Devon Road Runners, ran for up to six hours a day and said he is now enjoying a bit of a rest.

“The whole challenge went really well and I did a lot of it in sunshine,” he said.

“The hardest part was physically getting ready each morning before the final three marathons because I was tired and stiff.

“I had to massage and stretch through the aches and pains. A dip in the sea after running each day helped to relax my muscles.”

Dan’s wife, Hannah, supported him throughout the week and said she was ‘so proud’ of his achievement.

“We are all so proud of Dan and he was fantastic throughout,” she said. “Having seen the impact that diabetes has had on Arthur, we were keen to raise all the money we can for Diabetes UK as we want to support research.”

Phaedra Perry, Diabetes UK South West manager, said: “We are so impressed by Dan’s inspirational challenge, which has raised much needed funds for Diabetes UK.”
