The Devon branch of the group hoped to demonstrate the height of proposed turbines within a seven mile radius of the site.

THE Devon group of Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) flew a red blimp over Shebbear on Friday at the site of a proposed wind turbine.

The stunt follows a planning application at Badworthy Farm where a 77m (250ft) turbine is proposed and the CPRE group hoped it would illustrate the scale.

More than 100 people, including Torridge MP Geoffrey Cox, attended the site to also find a list of 50 wind turbines which are proposed within a seven mile radius.

Penny Mills, chairman of CPRE Devon, said: “This was a fantastic turnout, indicating the great strength of feeling that there is right across the district, that these industrial sized wind turbines are unacceptable in these rural locations being so close to people’s homes.

“They are ruining the countryside, people’s lives, and dividing our communities.

“People made many banners and placards and the red balloon could be seen for miles. It really highlighted how towering 77m is in this landscape.”

Mrs Mills said she was ‘extremely grateful’ to Mr Cox for spending time with the group but slammed district councillors for not attending.

She added: “No planning officers attended, nor even had the courtesy to reply to their invitation, and out of 36 councillors only 3 turned up this morning.

“That’s just 8 per cent of the councillors. Actions speak louder than words, don’t they?”
