Safety concerns highlighted by local solicitor to be discussed in detail
NORTH Devon councillors have deferred their decision on plans which could see big-screen sports coverage in Barnstaple Pannier Market.
Members of the planning committee had been recommended to approve a change of use from retail to retail, assembly and leisure, but decided to hold off to explore the advice of a local solicitor who spoke at Wednesday’s meeting.
Christopher Punt outlined possible issues with fire safety and toilet facilities in the market, as well as expressing concern that council members were voting on their own proposals.
Councillors were keen to approve the plans, which could see the historic building hosting exhibitions, demonstrations and performances all year round, on top of the current Monday to Saturday market activity.
However, they voted eight against four to defer their decision until August.
