Planning committee unanimously in favour of works to roof timbers and gable wall

PLANS to refurbish Ilfracombe’s yacht club have been approved by North Devon Council’s planning committee on Wednesday.

The council, which owns the Grade II listed building at the harbour, will spend £20,000 on structural repairs, including new roof timbers and repairs to the gable wall.

The 17th century building has a long association with the harbour and was previously used as the Harbourmaster’s office and as the Seaman’s Bethel chapel.

The building is currently used by the local Yacht Club and includes a clubhouse and changing facilities with showers.

Planning committee members voted unanimously to approve the plans.

Ward member Councillor Geoff Fowler said: “It’s an iconic building, a well used facility and I’m pleased to see this work go ahead.”

Executive member for development at Ilfracombe, Cllr Mike Edmonds, echoed those sentiments, adding: “Listed buildings always require extra care and these essential repairs will maintain the integrity of the building and keep it in use as a clubhouse.”
