Councillor Faye Webber’s remarkable achievement recognised at meeting

There was a special presentation at North Devon Council’s meeting on Wednesday.

Taken quite by surprise, Councillor Faye Webber was presented with flowers and a special gift to mark 40 years on the District council.

Chairman Councillor Geoffrey Fowler did the honours, handing over the bouquet and a ‘best bits’ book full of cuttings and photos of Faye’s time on the council, saying it was ‘a privilege’ to do so.

She was voted in at the council’s inception in 1973 with a majority of just one- taking the second seat for the ward of St Mary’s with 447 votes.

“40 years is a long time,” she said. “I didn’t know this was going to happen so I haven’t prepared a speech.

“I’ve enjoyed the years, it has been challenging and nothing has stayed the same.

“I do miss meeting all members of the council and think it’s a great pity we don’t meet more often. I think lately debate has gone across the floor and it’s become ‘them and us’.

“I served for over 20 years as an independent and enjoyed them, but having said that I still think I do just as I like.”

Mrs Webber also said she was happy to still be serving on the council, having overcome breast cancer nine years ago.

“Nine years ago I didn’t think I’d still be here now,” she said. “But I looked at the other side and said ‘there’ll be no by-election’. I kept that promise.

“I don’t know how many more years I’m going to go on for and I’m keeping that a secret.”
