Council to write to David Cameron over day centre closures

The Springfield Day Centre in Bideford is among 11 centres for the elderly and disabled facing closure under proposals announced by Devon County Council.

Bideford Town Council voted unanimously to write to Devon County Council in dismay at proposed day care centre closures.

BIDEFORD Town Council will be writing to Prime Minister David Cameron among other figures to fight against closures of care homes in the area.

Cllr Anne Brenton put forward the motion that the council should write to Devon County Council to ‘strongly object’ to the ‘travesty’ of the proposals.

She said: “Springfield Day Centre is vital to our community and there is no other provision to replace the work it does.

“None of the supportive organisations quoted in the consultation document can adequately replace this centre.

“Its closure will be devastating for service users and their carers who range from a majority of over 80 years old to one person of 100 years.”

Cllr Roger Vanstone stated the council should also take a practical approach.

He said: “It’s all well and good sending a letter but that’s just a piece of paper. We should see if there’s anything we can do as a council to keep these facilities open.”

Cllr Peter Christie suggested asking Devon County Council to use the money from the sale of Geneva Court to fund keeping the centres open.

He said: “We should also ask county if they’re going to raise council tax by 1.99 per cent, why can’t they ring-fence some of that for keeping the centres open?”

Cllr Brenton added she felt the town council should ring-fence some of its own ‘substantial reserves’ to subsidise the people who visit the day centres.

“We are the elected representatives of the people of Bideford. Now is the time to put our money where our mouth is,” she said.

But councillors were told any such submission would have to be brought to the agenda of a future meeting.

They voted unanimously to write to David Cameron, county councillors and Geoffrey Cox to fight against the closures.
