Bideford Town Council votes to explore the idea of registering day care centre - which is due to close in November - as asset of community value.

BIDEFORD Town Council is exploring the possibility of registering Springfield Day Care Centre as an asset of community value.

Councillor Peter Christie made the suggestion at Thursday’s meeting after councillors heard the centre would be closed by Devon County Council (DCC) in November.

Councillor Stuart Barker, DCC cabinet member for adult social care and health services, wrote to the council saying there was ‘more than one interest’ in providing services using the building at Springfield.

He said the county council would conduct a tender process and would ‘soon be exploring with those interests what their plans would be’.

But Cllr Christie said: “If the building isn’t taken over by a private provider it will go on the open market.

“I’m suggesting we wait and see what happens, and if that property is going to be sold we enter a claim that it’s a community asset.

“This would stymie the process, not forever but for some time, and they will have to prove then that it is not an asset.”

If successfully registered as an asset, it would mean should the building be sold, the council would be given time to come up with a bid.

Councillor David Brenton agreed with the suggestion, and added: “It is right bang in the middle of community assets all around it, with Victoria Park and the car park.

“Everything around it belongs to the community.”

Councillors voted to make a proposal to the staffing, finance and general purposes committee to look into making an application.
