BISHOPS Tawton Parish Council says it is “pushing on” with plans to tackle road safety at a notorious “blind corner”.

Less than 24 hours after councillors discussed the issue at a meeting on Thursday night, two motorists were hospitalised following a head-on crash in the village.

Part of the A377 near Rumsam Bridge was closed for much of Friday evening after the collision between a grey Peugeot 205 and a silver Freelander, which happened shortly after 4pm. Two male casualties, a 65 and a 73-year-old, both from Barnstaple, are understood to be in a “critical but stable condition” at North Devon District Hospital.

On Monday, parish council chairman John Taylor told the Gazette: “We’ve been on about this piece of road for many years.

“In the past, there have been two deaths about 70 yards from Friday’s accident – a motorcyclist about seven years ago, and a policeman about 15 years ago.

“It’s a blind corner and we consider it to be an accident black-spot – although I understand there has to be five deaths there before it is officially classed as one.”

Mr Taylor said the parish council would be asking Devon County Council to consider painting double yellow lines along the 150-yard stretch of road.

“It’s a dilemma because there is nowhere for residents to park, but we are looking at the possibility of using a grass bank for alternative parking.

“We are trying to make a case for this now, but budget restrictions could be a problem.”
