Plans for a 57m turbine at Holladon Farm approved but three other turbines refused by delegated decision.

TORRIDGE District Council has approved plans for a 57m wind turbine at a farm in Bridgerule near Holsworthy.

The plans committee heard today (Thursday) that Holladon Farm owner Alan Jones hoped the turbine would help ‘secure’ the farm’s place for years to come.

He proposed building the turbine to help pay his £6,000 electricity bills and subsidise some of the farm’s income.

But Christopher Darwin, speaking in objection to the plans, said people in rural areas were now living in a ‘haphazard industrial site’.

“An estate agent once told me this area is known as the ‘engine room of Devon’”, he told councillors.

Debating the proposals, Councillor Chris Leather said he did not like the ‘personal pleading’ that came with turbine applications.

“I don’t like hearing all the time how they’re going to keep the farms running by granting these turbines,” he said.

“We should be looking at purely planning here – we all know the issued around farming and agriculture.”

Cllr Peter Watson said he saw no objections to the plans and proposed to approve them, which was seconded by Cllr Mervyn Landmead.

Councillors voted eight in favour and one against approving the application.

Three turbines refused

THREE planning applications for wind turbines in Torridge have been refused by officers.

Torridge District Council’s plans committee heard an application for a 45m turbine at Langtreemoor Lane in Langtree was refused due to lack of information.

A further 55m turbine at Swingdon Farm in Ashwater, Beaworthy was also refused by officers for insufficient information regarding noise and the ecological impact.

A 34.5m turbine proposed at Tuttsclump Farm in Parkham was the third application to be refused due to impacts on the landscape character.

Planning executive Lewis Andrews said: “It is sending a message that the applications that come in with a lack of information aren’t going to be considered.”
