Torridge District Council has given proposals for up to 300 new homes off Manteo Way in Bideford the green light.

Councillors have voted to approve plans for up to 300 new homes in East-the-Water, Bideford.

The proposals by WJ and AD Evans came before Torridge District Council’s plans committee yesterday (Thursday) because the council owns part of the land.

All of the councillors but one voted in favour of the application, which will see the houses built on either side of Manteo Way.

There was some discussion over the fact only 20 per cent of the homes will be affordable, against the district valuer’s suggestion of 35 per cent.

Councillor Phil Pennington said: “When I started in this council in 2007 we were aiming for 40 per cent affordable homes.

“But 40 per cent now is about as likely as Swansea City winning the Premiership.”

It was also noted that part the land could sit above a former mine, and that further studies into this would have to be undertaken.
