Council are looking for a response on draft plans to create a sustainable future for the burrows.

CONSULTATION on the future of Northam Burrows has been opened to the general public.

A number of public events will be held over the coming month giving people the chance to comment on the draft proposals drawn up by Torridge District Council.

Councillor Gaye Tabor, lead member for the natural and built environment, said: “A wide range of options has been set out and we now want local residents and visitors to comment on the draft proposals.”

The options include a new café at the Burrows Centre, a brand new car park at the Westward Ho! access, a barbeque area and number plate recognition technology at Sandymere.

“We need to know if they are acceptable and viable options for users of the Burrows,” said Cllr Tabor.

“Any changes would require considerable commitment and effort and we want to make sure that whatever changes are proposed we have the support of those that use this wonderful area.”

The first event will take place on September 30 at Northam Hall from 11am-4pm, followed by the second event at Appledore Blue Lights on October 4 from 6.15pm-9pm.

There will also be an event on October 6 at Kingsley Hall in Westward Ho! from 2.15pm – 5pm and the final event will be held on October 8 from 6pm-9pm in Bideford Town Hall.

The council has already taken on board a petition for free access to the Burrows but the council is looking to create a more sustainable future in the long term.

The consultation will be open until October 26 and as well as the public events people can comment through an online survey or a hard copy available from council offices in Bideford, Torrington or Holsworthy as well as local libraries and parish councils.

All responses will be collated and form part of a report given to Torridge District Council’s community and resources committee on November 12.
