Bideford man weaned himself off pain relief drugs after breaking his jaw, court hears

A BIDEFORD man forged a prescription for strong pain relief medication to which he had become addicted after breaking his jaw, a court has heard.

George Sean Grahame, 23, of South View Terrace was referred to a dentist for further treatment, who had prescribed him medication to help with the pain.

However, North Devon Magistrates’ Court heard on Friday that Grahame had asked a friend ‘with good handwriting’ to add diazepam, commonly known as valium, to his prescription.

Chemists at Boots alerted the police as they felt it was unusual for a dentist to prescribe that drug.

Grahame admitted the charge, but defence solicitor Tim Hook told the court he had only done it to cut down and bring himself off the drug to which he had become addicted.

“This was a completely misguided attempt by him, but it was a symptom of the fact he was trying to get help,” said Mr Hook. “It was out of an attempt to achieve an appropriate objective.”

Grahame was given a 12-month conditional discharge and told to pay £15 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
