Company sees fruits of its fundraising efforts

A team from the Barnstaple-based business visited Uganda to see the work of the charity it supports.

WORKERS from a company which has raised thousands of pounds for local charity Amigos visited Uganda to see the results of their fundraising efforts.

Two people from Barnstaple-based Applegate Business Directory travelled around rural Uganda and provided sales and marketing classes, as well as visiting some of children the company sponsors.

“Travelling around the villages, we met a few of the sponsored children in their homes,” said account manager Paul Harper.

“One particular little girl stuck with me; at eight years old, she walks three kilometres to school each day and when she gets home she helps her mum with the house.

“In Uganda this includes maintenance and re-building of mud hut homes which can collapse frequently.

“The last time this happened the pair carried the tin roof of the hut on their heads for over ten kilometres.

“On one side, it was heart breaking to hear their story, but on the other side incredibly motivational to see how we are supporting these situations.

“I’ve learnt that while the basics - food, clothing and shelter - are, of course, incredibly important, education, skills and encouragement are helping to create better futures for these people in Africa.”

The company has supported Amigos for six years and seeing the work of the charity on the ground was a real eye opener.

Helen Murphy, sales liaison at Applegate, described the trip as ‘inspirational’.

She said: “We were greeted like royalty with singing, drumming and loads of hugs.

“The students were an inspiration to us all; they really wanted to learn as much as they could.

“Material items such as clothes and shoes are the least of the worries for anyone we met; skills and encouragement are far more beneficial.”

David Garth, CEO of Applegate Directory, said: “As a successful West Country business in the privileged position to be able to help others we feel it is important to look at the bigger picture and provide support where we can.

“Amigos does vital work and we hope that our ongoing support enables Amigos to help many more families in the future.”
