It follows a visit to the school by Caroline Pover, originally from Barnstaple who now lives in Japan, to talk about her Earthquake Mission appeal for the 500,000 people made homeless.

Caroline is touring the country speaking and collecting items such as clothing, toys and toiletries, which will be flown out to Japan free of charge by Virgin Atlantic.

Her Southmead visit was arranged via parent Monica Carter-Burns, who found out about Caroline’s appeal through a mutual friend who lives in Tokyo.

The school community and people in Braunton responded magnificently to an appeal for items and as a result the school reception had gathered quite a collection.

Class AF was the first to begin helping after the Japan disaster. The Year 3 and 4 children held a bucket collection and used the £35 raised to buy goods to donate, as well as donating some of their own toys to Japanese youngsters.
