Primary school given a big thumbs up by education inspectors after two years of close monitoring.

COMBE Martin Primary School is celebrating after emerging from under the shadow of the dreaded ‘special measures’ imposed by education inspectors.

In fact, Ofsted has told the school it is in the top 12 per cent of schools nationally to come out of special measures and be recognised as ‘good’.

The school was placed under close scrutiny by the education watchdogs in 2010 after a bad Ofsted report.

But this June government inspectors returned, following a two year programme of improvements and frequent monitoring – they gave the school a rating ‘good’ with outstanding elements in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

“It’s fantastic news that we’ve exited special measures and achieved such a good rating,” said head teacher Jo Walkden.

“We have been hopeful of this positive outcome following our interim monitoring inspection in March and I’m delighted this has now been confirmed. Everyone involved, from staff and governors to pupils and parents, has worked hard and supported the school objectives to raise standards and expectations.”

The report, published on Monday said there was ‘a rapidly improving trend in achievement.’

Chairman of governors Martin Winter added: “However, to turn it around so significantly, by being recognised as a good school with outstanding features, is truly a major accomplishment.

“Special praise should be given to the head teacher, all the staff and pupils, as well as the community who have supported the school throughout this process.”

Combe Martin has also just received its best ever year 6 SAT.

The news follows the announcement that Combe Martin is to form a federation with Woolacombe School, which will be in place from the start of the new academic year in September.
