Organisers hail a good week, while police commend a ‘good natured’ festival of events with no arrests.

COMBE Martin Carnival Week has been hailed a great success.

From opening day through to the main parade on Wednesday, and Friday’s fancy dress wheelbarrow race, there were plenty of events and costumed capers to enjoy.

As ever, participants pulled out all the creative stops for some ingenious themes, floats and wheelbarrows.

In among the main parades, there were plenty of activities for all ages to enjoy – from seashore safaris and workshops hosted by Combe Martin Museum, to a children’s pavement art competition, classic car show and glamorous granny night.

Ay yi yi.... caramba!Ay yi yi.... caramba!

There was a minor drama at Friday’s wheelbarrow race when a stray ember set some cliffside vegetation smouldering – but it was soon extinguished by the Combe Martin fire crew.

Chairman Kevin Lamb said they had seen good numbers of people turn out, with the seaside packed for most of the events.

“Overall it was a great event, well attended and with great village support,” he said.

Police have commended organisers after a week they said was good natured and did not lead to any arrests. Inspector Roger Bartlett said: “The organisers deserve a great deal of credit for pulling together a great event that was so well supported by the community. Carnival night on the Wednesday was relatively quiet, but the wheel barrow evening and fire work display were very well supported.

He added: “While a lot of alcohol was consumed, the atmosphere was very friendly and peaceful. The security team employed by the organising committee were excellent in their manner and team work. We had no problems of any significance. There was a great family feel to the event with lots of children enjoying themselves. The firework display was certainly one Combe Martin should feel proud of. It was excellent.”
