New block would replace outdated temporary classrooms.

PILTON Community College has submitted plans to replace outdated temporary classrooms with a new permanent block.

The school in Chaddiford Lane, Barnstaple, wants to demolish six old classroom buildings and build a split-level building of 10 classrooms with two offices and disabled access.

The new build would be cut into the slope leading down to the playing field and all-weather sports pitch.

The old ‘hut’ style classrooms, which date back to 1965, are described as being ‘well beyond their design life’, and expensive to heat and maintain.

According to a design and access statement submitted to North Devon Council on behalf of the school by architects David Wilson Partnerships, they are deemed ‘not fir for purpose in terms of conditions, insulation, size and disabled access’.

The statement said: “We believe that we are proposing a scheme that would sit well in its context, provide enhanced environment and ‘fit for purpose’ educational facilities.”

The proposals will now undergo a period of public consultation which ends on March 1.
