THE streets of Chulmleigh were alive with colour as the 761st Old Fair kicked off on Tuesday, July 22.

The fair was opened by Robert Aird who thrust the symbolic glove, representing the King’s gauntlet, through the upstairs window of the town hall.

Jasmine Trenaman was crowned fair queen, accompanied by attendant Frankie Ellis; chief herald Jacob Mitchell; heralds Tristram Mitchell and Dean Thorne; and crown bearer Aoibheann Rowden.

Tradition reigned throughout the event with coins tossed for the money scramble, and on Wednesday there were 60 stalls and a country market for visitors to enjoy.

A flower festival took place at the Congregational Church with love at the theme, and on Thursday there was a sports day and skittles tornament.

“A very enjoyable week with wonderful weather was concluded on Saturday with a fancy dress parade, fun and games, and other hilarious events,” said Sylvia Gilson, Chulmleigh Old Fair committee member.

“Numbers of visitors from away were down because some areas of the country had not yet started their school holidays.”

Next year’s fair will be held on July 28.
