CHRISTMAS will be extra special for the lucky Bideford family who won £5,000 in this year’s North Devon Hospice Bumper Draw.

Louise Rands-Silva admitted to being “totally shocked” when the phone call came through to say her winning ticket had been plucked from around 33,000 entries.

“I am thrilled to have won, and still can’t quite believe it,” she said.

“My late husband would have been delighted too as he used to love choosing his lucky numbers for the lottery.

“Now our sons will be able to have an extra special Christmas and so will his family in Brazil.

“Our thanks go to the companies that kindly sponsored the draw, and to all the dedicated team at North Devon Hospice who provide such a valuable, caring service to our community.”

This year’s Bumper Daw has raised £33,000 to help the charity continue to provide care for more than 100 local people suffering with the impact of a life-threatening illness every day.

Second prize, a Yamaha Scooter, provided by Ireland’s Motorcycles, was won by Audrey Wood from Barnstaple, who actually works as a hospice volunteer.

Hospice lottery manager, Mike Penny, said: “We were thrilled when Audrey’s name was picked out of the hat. She works very hard at the hospice, helping with all sorts of tasks every single week, so she certainly deserves some good news like this.”

Third prize of a £500 holiday voucher went to David and Liz Yorke-Moore of South Molton, who will be enjoying a relaxing break courtesy of Farm and Cottage Holidays.

Mr Penny said that the draw had been a huge success, and was thrilled that it had raised over £33,000 for the hospice: “It blows me away when you think that 33,000 tickets were sold over the course of the summer months.

“That is an incredible show of support from the local community, and it shows just how close North Devon Hospice is to the hearts of people in this area. It is nice to be able to acknowledge this support and make three people in particular very happy indeed.”

He added his thanks to the three main sponsors, Blights Motors, Irelands Motorcycles and Farm and Cottage Holidays.

“They have been great supporters of the hospice and have allowed us to raise a significant sum for the charity,” he said.
