A Christian shop and cafe in the centre of Barnstaple is to close on Christmas Eve due to escalating costs. Four employees - one full-time - are to be made redundant.Doves has been owned by businessman Philip Milton for the past 20 years. For most of that time, it operated from shops premises in Boutport Street.Last year, it moved to the Christian Centre opposite Barnstaple Parish Church. But Mr Milton, who ran it as his personal charity, said this week that sales had not responded to the move and costs had continued to escalate. He hoped someone with a vision for the future would come forward with the capital and a sensible proposal to take the business forward
