Amused passers-by looked on as staff at Marshals pub in Barnstaple braved the ice bucket challenge craze to raise money for the Chemotherapy Appeal.

Landlady Debbie Furnifer and barmaid Charlie Buck sat outside the Boutport Street pub to become the latest to join the ranks of those prepared to have a bucket of icy water dumped on them for charity.

The craze has swept the internet with countless celebrities undergoing the ordeal and then nominating others to do the same within 24 hours, or make a donation to charity.

Inspired, Debbie decided to nominate herself and Charlie, with the Chemo Appeal a cause never far from the thoughts of Marshals staff and customers.

Debbie’s husband Bill lost his life to cancer in June of last year, but since 2012 the pub has raised almost £5,500 for the appeal, as well as the Caroline Thorpe children’s ward.

The ice bucket challenge is the latest in a long line of charity events – regulars have organised real ale walks on the Tarka Trail, raffles, cake sales and collections, while customer John Cutler walked 121 miles from Minehead to Barnstaple for the appeal.

Debbie said the loss of Bill has prompted the fundraising to drive forward even harder, to help the appeal reach its £2.2million target.

“They need to get the unit built,” she said.

“Bill had to go to Exeter for treatment and they should not have to travel that far when their health is not good.

“I would like to thank all my customers and staff for their fundraising efforts, because everyone has put something in.”
