SCHOOL children filled more than 300 bags with rubbish at a huge beach clean event at Northam Burrows on Friday.

Pupils from Appledore Primary, Kingsley School and St George’s School joined Burrows rangers and local volunteers to shift litter from the county park.

Buckets, shoes, lighters, books, fishing nets, pens, bottles and hundreds of smaller pieces of plastic were all discovered throughout the day.

Burrows ranger Michael Day thanked those who took part: “The children were amazing – they collected so many bags full of rubbish.

“I really think they’ve learnt something about how to respect and look after our environment today, and I hope they take that with them and tell their parents too.”

Mrs Recycle was also there to teach children about the importance of recycling and conservation, while volunteers from Tesco conducted a marine waste survey in aid of the Marine Conservation Society.
