The North Devon cancer care Trust shop in Westward Ho! is donating all of its summer takings to the appeal.
A popular Westward Ho! charity shop is hoping to add £30,000 to the North Devon Chemotherapy Appeal total after pledging to donate all of its takings during the next three months.
Between July and September the North Devon Cancer Care Trust shop in Nelson Road is donating every penny to the appeal for a new chemotherapy unit and has called on locals and visitors alike to show their support.
The shop has a team of 38 dedicated volunteers led by manager Brenda Pellatt, with the assistance of trustee Brian Rogers, and is a major part of the charity’s fund raising efforts each year.
It has been there almost since the NDCCT was formed in 1994 by Jennifer Bonetta of Northam after the death of her husband Tom from cancer and her son James continues the work today.
Since it began, the charity has raised £1.8million to help local cancer patients and funds a transport service from North Devon to Exeter for patients needing radiotherapy.
It has already donated £350,000 to the Chemo Appeal.
“We have obviously given a fair amount of money already, but we thought let’s see if we can join in a bit more with the whole campaign and this just seemed like the sensible time of year to go for it,” said James.
Brenda said the shop was very well supported, not only by local people but those from as far afield as Exeter plus holidaymakers who made a point of returning each year.
“The volunteers work extremely hard - we are very grateful to them and would like to say a big thank you for all their work and to everyone who supports our shop,” she added.
The shop started as a two week venture when its owner and NDCCT trustee, the late Brian Cording, offered the space as a short term opportunity to raise funds - things went so well that almost two decades later it is still going strong and open six days a week.
The trust’s popular annual quiz is also available from the shop. This year’s subject is books, with a first prize of £100. Drop in and find out more, browse and help the Chemo Appeal reach its £2.2million target.
