Archant

The 100-year-old from Westward Ho! spent his life as a research chemist before becoming a preacher in Bideford.

THE perfect blend of science and faith could be the key to the longevity of one centenarian who celebrated his 100th birthday on Friday.

Reginald Benger, who was born in London in 1913, moved to North Devon 40 years ago where he married his late wife Daphne.

Mr Benger, who studied science at University, spent his career as a research chemist at Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI).

But upon moving to Bideford, the chemist started working for Bethel Church in East-the-Water, where he preached for 10 years.

Now the father of three, grandfather of five and great-grandfather of seven is a resident at the Golden Sands Residential Home in Westward Ho!

When asked the secret to a long life, Mr Benger said: “Help other people as much as you can.

“God has been good to me,” he said. “I wanted to do all I possibly could for him in return.”

Mr Benger spent his birthday afternoon surrounded by family and friends, enjoying tea and cakes at the residential home.
