SHOPKEEPERS have been urged to be vigilant after police released CCTV images of men suspected of using fake £20 notes in Ilfracombe.

The group hit at least nine businesses in the seafront area on July 9, handing over counterfeit notes in an illegal ‘shopping spree’ totalling around £220.

All the fake notes had the serial number HE13954709 and the owners of businesses have been warned to be on the alert when people come in asking for change, particularly of 20s.

“If they are suspicious or the notes bear the number, then they need to hold onto the notes, make a note of the description of the suspects, and ring 999 informing the police the suspects are still at or near the scene,” said Inspector Roger Bartlett.

“Retail staff should be confident and not give the notes back at least until the police attend. If the notes are given back, then other shops will be targeted and the evidence will be lost.”

The CCTV shows some of the group in the Sunspot Amusements.

One suspect was more distinctive, described as of large build and in his 30s, with a balding head and tribal tattoos on his arms. He was wearing a blue t-shirt with a Batman motif, blue jogging bottoms and white trainers.

Another man was also in his 30s and wearing a grey top, with the third wearing a striped top.
