Callous thieves steal family pets

10:20 30 December 2013

Braunton family stunned after a pet rabbit and two guinea pigs stolen from their hutches on Christmas Eve.

A Braunton family were left heart-broken after their pet rabbit and two guinea pigs were stolen overnight on Christmas Eve.

The pets belonged to Matt Fryer’s sons Jackson and Tomas, aged five and four, and he discovered them taken from their hutches on Christmas Day. The theft at David Close took place sometime between 6.30pm and 9.30am.

The rabbit is light ginger with white patches, while one guinea pig is a light mottle brown colour with pink eyes and the other is dark mottle brown.

But Mr Fryer said the family had been overwhelmed with support after posting news of the theft on Facebook and as a result numerous people had offered replacement pets, with the family due to pick up two guinea pigs and a rabbit today (Monday).

“I found it on Christmas Day, which was not very nice at all,” he told the North Devon Gazette today.

“The only thing we could think is they couldn’t afford their own pets. It’s absolutely heart-breaking, we have just told the kids now.

“A huge thank you to everybody, I posted it on Facebook the day it happened and it has been shared some 300 times. As a result we have had so many offers of replacement pets, it’s been overwhelming.

“This morning we are going to pick up another rabbit and two guinea pigs thanks to the kind generosity of North Devon people through the power of Facebook.”

Police have appealed for anyone with any information about the theft to call 101 quoting crime number CN/13/490.
