Figures show Woolacombe beach is one of the busiest in the county for rescues.

WOOLACOMBE beach was one of the busiest in the county last year with lifeguards dealing with 330 incidents.

Overalls incidents were down in North Devon, with 632 people assisted in 2013 compared with 900 people in 2012 at Croyde and Woolacombe.

But in Torridge incidents were on the rise with lifeguards at Sandymere and Westward Ho! assisting 238 people last year compared with 76 in 2012.

The RNLI lifeboats also has a busy year, with Ilfracombe, Appledore and Clovelly spending a total of 761 hours at sea.

Ilfracombe had 52 launches, Appledore had 12 launches and Clovelly had one launch.

Andy Hurley, RNLI Regional Operations Manager said: “The figures go some way to illustrating the incredible dedication shown by the charity’s volunteers, without whom we could not carry out our core purpose to save lives at sea.

“These volunteers are equipped and trained to respond to all kinds of incidents whatever the weather throws at them. However it is a massive commitment, not only for them, but for their families, loved ones and employers who must also become part of the wider RNLI family.”
