Three men from Barnstaple have raised a phenomenal amount for charity scaling Western Europe’s second highest peak.

THREE men from Barnstaple have braved the second highest peak in Western Europe raising nearly £30,000 for charity along the way.

The men took on the challenge to mark one year since Barnstaple dentist David Crosbie’s close friend, Angus Anthony, died of a brain tumour.

David scaled Monte Rosa in Switzerland for Brain Tumour Research with friends Rob Wakefield and Shaun Hannan from Barnstaple and Rob’s brother Nick Wakefield, from Jersey.

David said: “In 2008 Angus was diagnosed with a brain tumour, having walked into a post at a railway station which caused him to have a very severe headache, which became progressively worse.

“Angus was just 41 with two young children. Despite undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy, Angus lost his battle with the brain tumour and passed away in June last year.”

Despite having no previous climbing experience, the men trained hard for the challenge, including 100 mile cycle rides and 30 mile hikes over Exmoor with heavy rucksacks.

The group of friends originally set out to climb Mont Blanc, but arrived in Chamonix to find the risk of avalanche made it too dangerous to scale.

They settled for plan B, Monte Rose, and endured icy winds, snow and seven peaks-worth of climbing in a day, before a 5am start to reach the magical 4,634m summit.

David said: “Spending a night at 4,500 metres was surreal; the air only contains 56 per cent of the oxygen at sea level so you get a bit of a headache and tingly fingers. Sleeping is not easy.”

The four men have raised £28,900 including Gift Aid for the charity, to help fund further research into brain tumours.

David added: “Much more research is needed so that a cure is found, putting an end to families being torn apart in this way.

“Altogether it was a fantastic experience and we have a few scars to show for it.

“Thank you all so much for your support for such a worthy cause in memory of my great friend Angus Anthony.

“Mont Blanc - we are still gunning for you.”
