Braunton Bingo is back

12:16 12 February 2014

Archant

Popular community bingo returns this Friday (February 14) ready to raise money for a very special local cause.

BRAUNTON Bingo has enjoyed a successful year raising money for local good causes and opens its 2014 season this Friday with a particularly special appeal.

Doors open at the Parish Hall at 6.30pm, with eyes down at 7.45pm and organisers are hoping for a good turn out to get their year off to a great start.

All profits will go towards buying a special wheelchair for a young local girl, the granddaughter of one of the regular bingo players.

She suffers from a muscle wasting disease and the cost of the chair is £6,000 but it will last her until she is in her mid teens. Unfortunately she is not eligible for an NHS wheelchair until she is five-years-old.

The weekly bingo sessions were taken on two years ago by Jasmine Chesters and Linda Wellstead after they were in danger of being cancelled. They were joined by five other volunteers who give their time, free of charge every month, calling, making teas, selling tickets and the raffle.

Last year the bingo also raised £500 for the Chemotherapy Appeal, and gave several smaller sums to schools and a playgroup, which was used to buy footballs, kit and musical instruments.

It also helped the Musical Memories club stay open with money for the hire of the hall at Slade, guaranteeing it can stay open in 2014.

It is run by volunteers and is a singing group who meet to help those with dementia as well as stroke victims.

The last of the 2013 funds provided a lunch for members of the Friendship Club that meet weekly at Mariners Close in South Street.
