Local lad will be building up to the performance of a lifetime with five other Tourette’s syndrome sufferers.

A BRAUNTON musician will hit the television screens on Monday in a new documentary detailing his musical journey with Tourette’s syndrome.

Steve Ley, 26, is one of six young people brought together by Radio One DJ Reggie Yates in the new three-part series ‘Tourette’s: Let Me Entertain You’.

The series follows the group as they meet for the first time and train for their first performance together in front of a live audience, while battling the daily involuntary tics, movements and swearing brought on by Tourette’s.

“I’d never met anyone else with Tourette’s before and I think that was one of the best things to come from it,” said Steve.

“When we all first met we were really nervous but now I keep in touch with the entire group – it’s been such an awesome experience.

“I was a bit older than the other people, they reminded me of myself when I was younger and it was nice to be able to give them advice.

“Reggie Yates was great as well and so supportive, it’s been amazing for him to hear my stuff and he took one of my discs and was playing it loads.

“I’d love to be able to play live all the time and I hope this will give me the opportunity and the foot in the door I need.”

Tourette’s is thought to affect more than 300,000 people across the UK and there is currently no known cure.

But the documentary will be exploring how the performers find music is an escape from their daily lives as their symptoms temporarily disappear when singing or playing an instrument.

Steve has been performing at Open Mic nights since he was 16 and still regularly hosts his own around the area.

He added: “The documentary starts out talking about our lives but builds up to this amazing live performance; it was just an amazing opportunity.”

Tourettes: Let Me Entertain You premieres at 9pm on Monday on BBC Three.
