A BIDEFORD youngster has undergone life-changing surgery in America this week after his family rallied to raise £65,000.

In August of last year, the Gazette revealed how the family of three-year-old Jenson Tucker was hoping to raise the money for him to visit St Louis Children’s Hospital in Missouri.

Jenson suffers from cerebral palsy and epilepsy, and underwent the selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) surgery on Thursday.

His parents, Carly and Joel Tucker, mounted a fundraising campaign to fund the surgery and have gone above and beyond their £65,000 target.

On Monday, Carly said the operation has already changed Jenson’s life.

She said: “He’s been incredibly brave and is recovering really well.

“He is still in quite a bit of pain but the physiotherapist was very impressed with him yesterday.

“He’s got another night here and then can hopefully be discharged tomorrow.

“His legs feel very different, we’ve never seen them look this way – it’s an amazing thing to say.

“We’d just like to thank everyone once again who made this possible for Jenson; it really has changed his life.”

The family is due to fly back to the UK towards the end of the month. So far Jenson’s appeal has raised nearly £65,500.

As well as paying for surgery, the funds will help the family purchase physiotherapy and equipment which could enable Jenson to walk for the first time.
