Two-year driving ban and £525 in charges

A Bideford man who was seen urinating on the forecourt of a petrol station by police has been fined and banned from driving for two years after he refused to provide a specimen when he had been drink driving.

Paul Bennett, 34, of Daddon Hill in Northam appeared before North Devon Magistrates’ Court on Friday and was described by defence solicitor Lawrence Overend as ‘a man of good character’ who was ‘extremely remorseful’ after going out for a few pints of cider and urinating at the Esso garage on Kingsley Road, where he was asked by police to give a sample.

Having refused to do so, Bennett spent over 12 hours in a police cell, after which he expressed remorse for his actions.

In total, Bennett was ordered to pay the Court £525 and was banned from driving for 24 months.

On leaving the courtroom, he apologised to the magistrates for ‘wasting their time.’
