Bideford holds open morning to recruit on-call fire fighters

The station is looking for retained fire fighters and will be open next Sunday to speak to anyone interested about the role.

BIDEFORD fire station is holding an open morning for prospective on-call fire fighters on September 9.

Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue is currently looking to recruit new ‘retained’ fire fighters who live and/or work within five minutes response time to the fire station.

Men and women need not have any experience of fire fighting, but must have a commitment to the community, a positive attitude and a good level of fitness.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “Being on-call means that you provide a level of cover whilst at work or at home and when you are needed your pager will alert you to attend the station.

“People who can give cover during the day are particularly needed.”

Retained fire fighters usually have primary occupations either employed or self employed, and the service has made examples of employees in factories, shops, takeaways and restaurants.

The spokesman added: “You need to be over 18 and have a good level of fitness and strength, but sometimes people overestimate the levels required and this can deter them (particularly women) from applying.

“The service will give people advice and help in preparing for both the written and practical assessments.

“Equally living with a disability is not automatically a barrier to operational fire fighting; it depends on the nature of the disability.

“Once you are recruited full training is provided.”

Anyone interested in finding out more about becoming a retained fire fighter can visit Bideford Fire Station on Clovelly Road on September 9 between 10am and 1pm.
