Bideford holds Bake Off and Can’t Cook Won’t Cook contest

Competitors young and old are being urged to get baking for competition in Bideford Pannier Market this month.

BUDDING bakers and young chefs are being called upon to conjure up some delights at a Bake Off and Can’t Cook Won’t Cook competition in Bideford.

The events, which are both free to enter and are aimed at getting families cooking together, will be held on March 29 at Bideford Pannier Market.

In the Bake Off, amateur bakers can compete to whip up the best bread, scones and cupcakes in town with two age categories: 11 years and under, and over 11 years.

Meanwhile for the Can’t Cook, Won’t Cook, local chefs will be demonstrating simple recipes in three sessions using locally sourced, fresh produce.

Youngsters, with an adult family member to supervise, will then be able to have a go at creating the dish themselves for the whole family to try.

“The idea is that the family will come along to support them and then they can take part in the best bit – the tasting,” said town councillor David Howell, event organiser.

“We’re hoping this will make children see that cooking is fun, and encourage families to cook easy, healthy meals together.”

Meanwhile the Bake Off will be judged by local professionals Graham Blight of Country Cottage Bakery, John Emms of Lathwells and Carol Wawrychuk of the Pannier Pantry.

“We’re looking for the overall package, to see who puts in real effort,” said Graham.

“You don’t have to be a professional baker; it’s all about taking part and having a good go at it.”

Cllr Howell said he hoped if the event was a success it could become a regular thing.

“I’ve invited all the local schools, scouts and guides groups, cadets, Women’s Institute, rotary clubs and round table members, so I am hoping for a good turn out,” he said.

Winners of the over 11s category will take home a meal for two at Lathwells, and the winners of the under 11s will be awarded cookery books.
