BIDEFORD is on course to get its own temporary radio station next month.

A team of radio enthusiasts behind a campaign to bring local radio back to North Devon has applied to Ofcom for a 28-day Restricted Service Licence (RSL) and hopes to begin broadcasting on January 21.

If approved by the Government media regulator, Bideford FM – The Voice, will go live on 87.7FM.

It will follow similar successful 28-day broadcasts from a new studio in Barnstaple Square. The Voice 106 received widespread support from listeners in the Barnstaple area when it aired for 28 days last month.

Festive FM – being produced from the same studio by Barnstaple Town Centre Management – is currently enjoying similar success on the same frequency and will broadcast until Monday, January 3.

Ian Starling, who launched the Network North Devon radio campaign on the internet following the relocation of Heart Barnstaple to Exeter in the summer, said he was confident that Ofcom would approve the Bideford licence.

“They’ve never turned one down before so hopefully we should be able to go live with a Bideford station next month,” he said.

“We’ll be taking a couple of weeks off after Festive FM finishes and although we’ll be producing the next station from Barnstaple, we’ll be giving people in Bideford a radio station they can call their own.”
