Gail Hickman has pledged to ‘stop ranting’ for a day for every £1 that is donated to her Shelterbox appeal to help those hit by Typhoon Haiyan.

A NORTHAM woman is urging people to donate money to Shelterbox in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

As many as 11 million people are thought to have been affected after the storm ripped its way across the islands on November 8.

Gail Hickman, a member of Bideford Rotary Club, is now actively trying to fundraise £600 – the cost of a box to help 10 people in the disaster zone.

She said: “As soon as I saw what had happened I knew I had to help. I’m a pensioner and I don’t have the money to just write a cheque so that’s why I’ve set this up.

“I’m urging people to just give £1 out of their Christmas shopping – the price of a string of tinsel – to help those in the Philippines.

“If 600 people do this, that’s a whole box paid for which provides a tent, sleeping bags, a stove and other lifesaving items to help 10 people.

“My friend Lorraine calls me the ‘fiesty fairy’ because I am always ranting on Facebook, so I’ve promised not to rant for a whole day for every £1 I get.”

The Bideford Rotary Club is also fundraising for Shelterbox and has just paid for two more boxes to be sent out to the Philippines.

“The club has now donated 191 Shelterboxes in the time it has been fundraising for the charity and is aiming to reach a target of 200,” added Gail.

Alison Wallace, chief executive of ShelterBox, said: “The pictures from the storm-lashed communities of the Philippines have moved us all.

“ShelterBox was already at work in the Bohol area responding to last month’s earthquake, so was able to respond to the typhoon quickly with extra aid and extra response teams.

“Our ability to help in disasters like this is possible only because we have such fantastic volunteers, supporters and fundraisers, particularly in the South West.

“Their big-hearted response means that we can give shelter and hope to families who have lost everything.”

Gail has already raised £120 and anyone who wishes to help her appeal can donate at www.justgiving.com/Gail-Hickman.
