Bideford votes in new town mayor

THE new mayor of Bideford has vowed to take an open and honest approach with young people and jobs at the top of his agenda.

Councillor Mervyn Langmead was unanimously voted in as the new mayor, taking over from Cllr Simon Inch who has served two years in the post.

Councillor Phil Pester, who proposed Cllr Langmead as the new mayor, was voted in as deputy with a majority of seven votes to four.

Taking the mayoral chains from Cllr Inch, Cllr Langmead said: “I’d just like to thank you all for voting for me to get up here in the hot seat.

“I hope I can be worthy of the trust you have put in me this evening and I hope I can do a good job.”

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Langmead told the Gazette he hoped councillors valued his honesty.

“I believe in taking both sides of the story and even if I am the only person with that opinion I will always say what I think,” he said.

“I am very much looking forward to my time as mayor.

“I value the youth because they are the future of any county or town.

“I also favour jobs and I want to create more and more within Torridge and Bideford.”

Cllr Langmead, who is has lived in Bideford his whole life, is serving his fourth year on the council.
