The unit’s old building was replaced with fresh classroom block donated by former councillor Steve Clarke OBE.

THE Bideford Sea Cadets were officially handed the keys to their brand new building in Victoria Park this weekend.

The T S Revenge building was dedicated to the memory of former councillor Steve Clarke OBE, who donated the old classroom block to the cadets.

Cllr Clarke, who died in December last year, donated the building to the unit for free when the new block opened at Chulmleigh Community College.

Chris de Blocq van Kuffeler, of the sea cadets, told the Gazette the unit was ‘extremely grateful’ to Cllr Clarke and had erected a memorial outside of the building.

“We thought that having the Kathleen and May’s spare anchor, donated by the family, was a fitting tribute,” he said.

“We are so grateful for this building. Our old one was built in 1942 for the Home Guard and was in a state of disrepair.

“This is a building the whole community can use. The Brownies and Women’s Institute have been using it already.”

The formal handover happened on Saturday morning with the Clarke family presenting the keys to the Bideford Sea Cadets.
