The new port memorial will feature three terracotta plaques made by a local artist showcasing the town’s history.

BIDEFORD’S history in fishing, tobacco trading and the Bideford to Westward Ho! railway will be depicted in the new port memorial.

Three different scenes, which were voted on by town councillors last night (Thurs) will take the form of terracotta plaques on the memorial.

The re-design forms part of a £111,000 project to regenerate the area on Kingsley Road.

Councillor Peter Christie put forward the suggestions, and said: “Half of the money comes from FLAG funding so we have to have some fishing.

“There’s no record anywhere in the town of the Bideford to Westward Ho! railway and the memorial is actually built on top of the site of it.

“Bideford’s port really reached apex with tobacco imports coming in, it was extremely important.”

Councillor Andy Powell suggested a plaque to commemorate colonialisation in place of the railway idea.

“We sent people from here to Canada, America, Australia, New Zealand – the port is all about the tobacco trade, fishing and colonialisation,” he said.

But a majority of councillors voted for Cllr Christie’s submission, with a back up idea suggested by Councillor Mervyn Langmead of a plaque about the pottery trade
