Mobile oyster business hopes to raise £5,000 to sell local seafood in Westward Ho!

A BIDEFORD woman is hoping to raise £5,000 through crowd funding to help launch a mobile oyster and seafood bar in Westward Ho!

Lyndsay Platt was made redundant from her job in Bristol as a youth worker and started The Glorious Oyster two years ago.

She was inspired when she saw a fishmonger selling oysters on a Saturday morning outside his shop and despite being warned against it, she decided to give it a go.

“I bought a load of oysters, went down to a street market and pretty much sold out – that was my make or break moment,” said Lyndsay.

“It took off since and now I have noticed a real gap in the market down here for street food selling sustainable, local seafood.”

Since moving to North Devon last year Lyndsay has been sourcing oysters from a farm at Instow and successfully applied for a license to sell them in Westward Ho!

“I love the look on people’s faces, especially children, when they pluck up the courage to try oysters for the first time,” she said.

“So much of the seafood and fish caught here is shipped away before the local people even have a chance to buy it.

“It won’t just be oysters though – I’ll be selling a range of local seafood including crab, mussels, scallops, squid, lobster and whelk.

“I hope because of the local aspect and sustainability, people will get behind The Glorious Oyster.”

Lyndsay is hoping the money raised through Crowdfunder will enable her to purchase and convert her friend’s horsebox to run the business from.

The idea is people can donate as much or little as they like through the crowd funding website until July 16, in return for a pledge from the business.

Pledges range from a £5 voucher if you donate £10 or more, to company sponsorship and catering for an event of 50 people for larger donations.

Lyndsay has already raised more than £1,200 and has also secured funding through the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’s sustainable development fund.
