The 53-year-old is making a stand to fundraise for Cancer Research UK after being diagnosed for a second time.

A BIDEFORD man is making a stand against cancer after discovering the disease returned just days before he was due to get the all clear.

Nigel Hammett, 53, first contracted bowel cancer in December 2008 and underwent surgery and chemotherapy to try and combat it.

But in April this year the father-of-two discovered it had returned and spread to his pelvic soft tissue and hip bone.

In a bid to raise awareness and money for Cancer Research UK, Nigel has joined Channel Four-backed campaign Stand Up To Cancer.

He said: “If I can use what I am going through to help just one less person hear the words ‘you have cancer’, I know it will be worth it.

“It’s only been down to my amazing friends, family and colleagues that I have been able to do this and stand up and shout about it.

“I know there is a cure out there somewhere and I have to do my bit to try and help rid the world of this evil disease, as it affects everyone.”

Nigel, who had to leave his job as an analytical lab supervisor at Perrigo where he has worked for 36 years, is hoping people will donate money towards his campaign.

He said: “This campaign is something that is keeping me going through my treatment and I hope I can encourage people to give towards this amazing charity.”

Anyone wishing to donate can do so either by visiting http://www.justgiving.com/Nigel-Hammett.

Those without access to a computer can also donate £2, £5 or £10 by text at no change by texting TQYI66 and the amount they would like to give to 70070 (for example TQYI66 £5).

Alternatively, contact Sarah Howells at the Gazette on 01271 341658 to have your details passed on to Nigel.
