Bid for higher Allenstyle homes withdrawn

Developers cease efforts to overturn planning condition on 53 home estate at Yelland.

Developers have withdrawn a bid to build two storey houses on a controversial site for new homes at Yelland.

Consent for 53 homes on the site was granted in October following several attempts by Len tanner to develop the site – but on condition homes went no higher than one-and-a-half storeys.

A new application in March sought to remove that restriction, saying it was ‘unnecessary’ and ‘an impediment to creating a detailed proposal of good high quality design that will create an attractive and comfortable residential environment offering an appropriate mix of buildings of architectural scale and style’.

It generated a furious response, with North Devon Council receiving 56 letters of objection.

There is as yet no indication why it was withdrawn. The North Devon Gazette has asked the applicant’s agent if he wishes to comment.

District Councillor Rodney Cann hailed the news as ‘a victory for commonsense and people power’:

“There was massive objection to the proposal, so this is good news and we hope it is not re-submitted again,” he said.

“Applications in this area had been turned down a number of times in the past and so one of the main conditions this time was that they have a height restriction on it.”
