Skaters using an Ilfracombe skate park will be able to hone their skills throughout the winter.

Plans to install floodlights at Bendricks Skate Park at Larkstone were approved by North Devon Council’s planning committee at its meeting at Barnstaple Rugby Club on Wednesday.

The four lights will allow skaters to safely use the park until 10pm each night, extending its availability through the winter months.

Local ward member, Councillor Mike Edmunds, said: “I welcome this application – it’s the easiest decision Ilfracombe has put forward.

“I’m quite happy with this and welcome the 10pm limit on it, after that it becomes a bit of a nuisance.”

Ilfracombe West Councillor Geoff Fowler added: “From the town council we’ve been pressing for it and also been pressed by skaters to do this for a considerable amount of time.”

In response to the application, Devon and Cornwall Police’s designing out crime officer, Rick Napier, said the lighting would be a ‘welcome addition’ from a safety and security perspective, and would help prevent crime and anti-social behaviour.
